Seeing to Listen

With the Living Word, one can revisit the same passage over the years, to discover a word in season. These words though spoken thousands of years ago, today can draw a parallel to us in a most personal and intimate way. It is the Living Word.

Recently I was invited to lead one of my teams in a time of devotion. I reflected from the book of Habakkuk. It remains a book that is a word in season to me in these days of uncertainty.

“God is on the move .. pestilence marches before Him; plagues follow in His steps …”
Habakkuk 3:3a, 5a

“God is on the move .. His splendour overtakes the skies …
His radiance is like a bright light, rays stream down from His Hand, and there His power is hidden.
Habakkuk 3:3a, 4.

Splendour and pestilence, plagues and radiance. We hardly ever consider pestilence and plagues when God is on the move.

What was Habakkuk’s response?
“I will watch and see what He says to me.” Habakkuk 2:1c

What did Habakkuk see? What did he hear?
In the splendour and pestilence, plagues and radiance, he saw there His power is hidden.

Precisely because Habakkuk listened by seeing, his lament concluded with a psalm of praise.

Though God answered his cries by bringing upon the land upheaval and chaos, Habakkuk brings his dialogue with God to a close with praise. In the course of his conversation with God, Habakkuk learnt to listen by seeing. In seeing to listen, Habakkuk came to a place of rest. For He saw the hidden power and listened for the Divine purpose. By it He understood all circumstances and events are part of God’s greater plan. God the Creator is always in control. All circumstances and events are the unfolding of His great redemption story. No evil or harm, trouble or suffering can force the plot of the greatest love story to deviate.

This world of ours is passing. There is no permanence to the things of this world. Yet, the passing of this world will usher in a new world, where God will dwell with His faithful. The faithful will be vindicated. God will be the inheritance of the faithful.

John recorded this vision of the new world when He was transported to the end of history as we know it.

“See the home of God is with His people.
He will live among them;
They will be His people,
And God Himself will be with them.
The prophecies are fulfilled:
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
Mourning no more, crying no more, pain no more,
For the first things have gone away.

See I am making all things new.
I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

To the victors will go this inheritance:
I will be their God, and they will be My children.
Revelation 21: 3-4, 5a, 6a, 7

Are you feeling unsettled? Are you upset? See to listen for God in the midst of all that is happening. See there His hidden power. Listen for the great redemption story. God is coming for His faithful.
