Responsible witness: Honouring God in the midst of pain

By Claire Khoo

As a Christian cancer survivor I truly honour personal testimonies and lived experiences. However, over the course of 12 years post cancer, I’ve seen too many Christians who are eager to turn their healing into an opportunity to campaign freely to the world about how Jesus heals… note that the success of living post a difficult illness apparently is proof that God in our brand exists. .

This reflection is about the responsibility that we must bear when we share the goodness of God with people — especially with those who are vulnerable, ill, or grieving. We have to remember that Christianity was never a faith about cause and effect and accepting Jesus does not guarantee miracles.

Faith that is tied only to outcomes can unintentionally wound others. Christ in us means we live our lives in such a way that we inspire and comfort those in pain to want to be in our spaces, that our presence extends the experience of God to them that aids in their healing and recovery. This is how people can experience the goodness of God amidst times of trouble and pain.

Editors note: Claire is a member of BLC. I saw this on her Facebook page. I was struck by how raw it is. And how she touched on something few speak about, though many share her views. I’ve reproduced it with her permission. Because I believe BLC is a safe space for dangerous conversations.
