Philippines Super Typhoon “Haiyan” Relief

We are well aware of the devastation left behind in the wake of super-typhoon “Haiyan” in the Philippines. The global community is responding to the various appeals for aid to the victims of this disaster.

This Sunday, we will also respond to the call for help and dedicate the whole of our Missions Offering to the victims of Haiyan.

Together with the Bishop’s Office and all Lutheran Church Malaysia (LCM) congregations, we will consolidate a relief fund and send it to the appropriate relief agencies.

If you are unable to come this Sunday to add to the relief funds through the Missions offering, here are other avenues to channel your support:

Please continue to remember those who are suffering, especially those who lost their loved ones, in your prayers. There is a lot of devastation in the wake of Haiyan – many people, especially children and the elderly, have been left vulnerable to disease and sickness. There is also a great lack in terms of water and food – even as the world quickly rallies its response.

Lord have mercy on those who are suffering in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Bring relief and comfort swiftly – and help us be your hands and feet to do this. Amen.

Prepping for our Rumah Hope visit!

Since we announced our Tree of Hope initiative, we’re pleased to report that all the children tags have been taken up and we’ve started to receive some lovely messages via the Christmas cards that are being returned.

We’d also like to update you on some of the activities that are happening with Rumah Hope as we gear up towards our visit on 8 December 2012!

First, on 5 November, Sarah brought a team from Oh Jun Hair Salon to provide hair cuts for the children of Rumah Hope. Oh Jun, who is Korean and is based in Ampang, was certainly looking forward to do his part for a good cause and we are very thankful that he was willing to come with his professional team of stylists!

Then, yesterday 26 November, Sarah and Wan Ching went out and started purchasing school uniforms and shoes for all 50 children of Rumah Hope! A huge kudos to the two ladies, as well as Keat Lim and Wan Ching’s kids: Mynn and Jearn for helping out late into the evening as well!

The super-efficient Wan Ching organizing buying different shoe sizes for 50 different Rumah Hope kids!

Loading up the car with the very industrious help of Jearn and Mynn (not pictured)!

A huge thank you especially to Sarah and Wan Ching, as well as the rest of the Giving Tree Life Group for organizing this!

Tree of Hope

This year, as part of our Advent and Christmas celebration, Bangsar Lutheran Church will provide school uniforms and school shoes to each of the 50 children of Rumah Hope.

This is how we are doing it:

  • We have set up a Christmas tree in the church with “tags” in the shape of boys and girls on the tree. Each tag represents one boy or girl in the home – with the child’s name and age listed. Each tag also represents a “pledge” of RM100, which is the budget required for the uniforms and shoes.
  • All church members are encouraged to take at least one tag and give your RM100 contribution to Sarah, Wan Ching or Hannah. We will then go and purchase the requisite amount of uniforms and shoes on your behalf (with the sizes provided by the team at Rumah Hope). If you can afford more, please take more tags. Please feel free to combine efforts with someone you know so that you can share out the costs.
  • You will also be given a “card” for your “sponsored child” – please feel free to write your Christmas message to the child. You can also decorate the card as you wish.
  • We will all then go with our presents and cards to Rumah Hope on 8 December 2012, where we will spend some time with the kids. We are planning to have some games, light refreshments and a time of giving out presents.

If you would like more information about this, please feel free to contact Sarah, Wan Ching or Hannah in church. We hope that you will continually pray for the children of Rumah Hope as well as consider your participation in this.

World Vision Malaysia at BLC

Our church has maintained a long-standing relationship with World Vision Malaysia, as a ministry partner and child sponsor.

This morning, Paul from World Vision Malaysia, came and shared with us about their work.

Speaking from Luke’s gospel about the Parable of the Good Samaritan, he asked three questions:

  • What stops us from helping others?
  • Why help others anyway?
  • Are we able to help those who are different from us?

We also had our very own Michelle share about her experience, along with her family’s, as a World Vision child sponsor! She shared how, since discovering the Advent Conspiracy, her family has opted to spend their money on changing the lives of their child sponsorship recipients instead of on “useless gifts”.
