Sermon: Christ’s Presence In The Shadows – Rev. Dr. Sivin Kit

Blessed Christmas Day!

We were blessed with a wonderful, simple and meaningful service today.

Our artist friend, Komeil, did an amazing live painting during the service! Here’s the end result:

We also had BLC Family members present Christmas carols in sign language! Check out their practice session here:

We also had Pastor Sivin will also finish up his Advent and Christmas sermon series with, “Christ’s Presence In The Shadows.” Of course, there was the usual pop-culture reference to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story… with Sivin all decked out in what he calls his “Jedi Robes” (*cough* vestments *cough*).

You can check out Sivin’s snazzy sermon Prezi here.

Of course, no celebration is complete without the BLC Family enjoying a meal together. We loved the delicious food catered from our neighbors – Lubuk Bangku D’Cabin Cafe. It was delicious! They’re right opposite us – so feel free to check them out during the week.

Sermon: Renewed Beginnings – Pastor Sivin

Sivin Kit - Renewed Beginnings 20160103

For his first sermon (back) with Bangsar Lutheran Church, Rev. Dr. Sivin Kit preached from John 1:1-18 on the theme “Renewed Beginnings.”

It was still the Christmas season, according to the liturgical calendar. Sivin traced the story of how God came to dwell among people through Jesus Christ; the Christmas story. Drawing from contemporary examples, he outlined how today’s circumstances and happenings were similar to the environment in which Jesus was born. Despite that, God continued ahead with His plan to “tabernacle” with humanity.

Sivin eventually led us to consider the question, “Why are you still a Christian?”

His answer was essentially:

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

– John 1:14

This morning, our founding pastor Sivin Kit, joined us for service! He was passing through Malaysia for a short trip as part of his PhD work in the region.

It was certainly great to see him again!

Hopefully, next time he’ll stay longer (or for good!).

I’ve heard people refer to BLC as “The Father’s House”. What’s up with that?

Recently, one of our church family Karl asked why we refer to Bangsar Lutheran Church as “The Father’s House” and what imagery was the name supposed to connote.

Well, according to our Founding Pastor Sivin Kit, the reference is based on Jesus’ saying in John 14:1-4:

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”

When we started in 2000, the premises still had 4 rooms next to the main hall. Each room had some nice names like, the “Thinking Room” for the office; the “Learning Room” for the library, and the “Growing Room”, for the nursing mothers’ room. It also gave us a chance to tell newcomers, “There’s always room… for you.” It provided an environment and culture that felt more like family, welcoming like a home, rather than that of a school, battle station or even a cold centre. It further allowed us to make a distinction between the Church as the people of BLC, and the ‘church’ as a place or building.
