Good Friday is one of the major landmarks of the Christian calendar, signifying a moment when it was thought all hope was lost. It was the same moment that demonstrated the power of faith, and nearly 2,000 years later, is still viewed with much the same reverence as it was from the moment the significance was understood.
Good Friday traditionally marks one of the most crucial moments in Christian history: the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is generally accepted that it was on Friday that Jesus died on the cross after being arrested, whipped and interrogated. It is included in a line of holidays that also includes Ash Wednesday, Lent, Palm Sunday and Holy Saturday, which all lead up to the celebration of Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Christ.
At Bangsar Lutheran Church, we will commemorate Good Friday with a Tenebrae Service (Latin for ‘shadows’ or ‘darkness’). The Tenebrae service is a Christian liturgy celebrated by the distinctive ceremony of gradually extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited.
