Station 5: Jesus Cries Out in Abandonment

Matthew 27:46-47

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

2 Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Psalm 22:1

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

Adult Reflection

To reconcile us fully, the Son experiences the profound spiritual alienation of sin – “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” So that we, who were once far off, might never know that abandonment. He becomes the rejected One so we can become the accepted children of the Father.

Reflect:

Have you ever felt alone?

Jesus understands.

Children’s Reflection

Jesus felt completely alone and left by God. This is the worst kind of lonely, so that you and I would never, ever have to feel that way. He hung on the Cross to bring us back into God’s warm, loving light.

Dear Jesus, you felt all alone so that I would never, ever have to be alone from God. Thank you for going into the dark place of sin’s prison  to bring me into the light.

When ready, please proceed to the next station.
