Happy Easter season, everyone! Our First Friday of the Easter season is going to be a suitably colorful session featuring reflection, experimental art and also music, led by Johnben Loy :)

It has been said, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”

This Friday, we invite you to come to express your worship for an hour through visual art and music.

When you come in at 8:15pm (or even if you are late), find for yourself a table or a board with a large piece of art paper and some pastels. (Those of you who prefer sculpture, feel free to bring along your own materials.) There will be an instruction sheet to help guide you in how to participate. Then…

… create your art of worship to God from your heart, individually, in community.

No prior training is necessary; only a desire to engage in creative worship.

Art materials will be prepared enough for 15 participants. If more than 15 people are signed up on this Facebook page before this Friday (5 April), we are able to prepare more materials.

We will provide worship music, live, on the piano. And if you can play by ear, bring your instrument along and we can jam (and sing) softly to God while others worship through visual arts.

At the end of the hour, we will share our pieces with one another. Those who are willing may leave their pieces to be displayed at the Father’s House.

Come and flow.

First Fridays are monthly evening gatherings at Bangsar Lutheran Church: A simple hour of contemplative and reflective worship for those seeking an “alternative” space to slow down at the end of the week… a respite from the busyness of our daily experience and a chance to renew our strength in God’s presence and one an…other’s fellowship.

In the past, this meeting has included moments of silent prayer, art, scripture reading and reflection, and songs.

First Fridays are an experimental space to share fresh approaches, as well as to revisit age-old traditions in Christian worship. Guests are invited to suggest readings, music and other prayer & thought points for future meeting. Please feel free to contact any of the event hosts/admins with your ideas!

A huge word of thanks to Meili and her Holy Week crew for the great job in organizing, putting up and packing away all that we did during Holy Week, especially:

We hope you were blessed throughout your Lent and Holy Week journey!

Bishop Philip Lok’s Easter Message 2013

The Bishop’s Easter Message 2013

He is not here; he has risen! – Luke 24:6

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Risen Lord,

Even as this message is being prepared, we, as Malaysians are facing much uncertainty. The conflict between our armed forces and the Sulu terrorists continues into the third week with no peaceful resolution in sight. The date of the 13th General Election is yet to be determined as our federal government still waits for the opportune time to dissolve the parliament.

In the face of these uncertainties, we probably can understand the emotions of the disciples as they huddled together in a small room the day after the crucifixion. They were concerned for their future. No doubt, Good Friday enabled them to know a God who understands their fears and anxieties. Yet, the disciples (and us) need a certain hope, a certain destiny. Hence, “He has risen!

Easter Sunday is the bedrock of the Christian faith. The resurrection of Jesus reminds us that not only does God reach into the deep trenches of human pain, but also provides us the certainty of hope, peace, and a new life which has began on that first Easter. It gives meaning to our experiences as we await the final return of the risen Christ.

This is the message that we need to share with our neighbors and friends. As the angel said to the women, “Go, tell his disciples and Peter….”, let us too go and proclaim the good news of the Lord’s resurrection.

May this Easter lead you more deeply into the reality of Christ’s resurrection, and of your own.

Lent 2013: #LentNTByEaster – Day 36: John 16-24

Today: John 16-24

(This year, for Lent, we are encouraging everyone to finish reading the New Testament by Easter through a specially prepared bible reading plan - in just 40 days and only 6 days a week!)

CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU MADE IT THROUGH THE ENTIRE NEW TESTAMENT THIS LENT!

(In case you’re wondering why this isn’t marked as Day 40, it’s because the 40 days of the Lent season doesn’t include the Sundays – and the readings reflect that. There were no readings for 4 Sundays from Ash Wednesday, hence this is Day 36 of the readings.)

Good Friday Tenebrae Service 2013

Good Friday is one of the major landmarks of the Christian calendar, signifying a moment when it was thought all hope was lost. It was the same moment that demonstrated the power of faith, and nearly 2,000 years later, is still viewed with much the same reverence as it was from the moment the significance was understood.

Good Friday traditionally marks one of the most crucial moments in Christian history: the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is generally accepted that it was on Friday that Jesus died on the cross after being arrested, whipped and interrogated. It is included in a line of holidays that also includes Ash Wednesday, Lent, Palm Sunday and Holy Saturday, which all lead up to the celebration of Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Christ.

At Bangsar Lutheran Church, we will commemorate Good Friday with a Tenebrae Service (Latin for ‘shadows’ or ‘darkness’). The Tenebrae service is a Christian liturgy celebrated by the distinctive ceremony of gradually extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited.

All our welcome to join us this Friday evening, 8pm at The Father’s House for our Good Friday Tenebrae Service. Stations of the Cross will be made available after the service.

Event information on Facebook is available here.
