Journey’s Mercies Joyce and Rama!

Today, with heavy hearts, we bid farewell and travel mercies to Joyce and Rama as they embark on a new chapter of their lives in Europe. Rama has contributed greatly to our community as Treasurer (especially since no one else wanted to take up the role!) and Building Renovation Chairperson while Joyce has always been faithful in many things around the church, including: as an usher, decorating the altar, preparing great banners and managing hospitality – even when those who were originally scheduled were unable to make it.

We will miss them both – their faithfulness, hospitality, smiles and wisdom. But we wish them well and pray that the Lord will return them to our community soon.

Journey’s mercies until we meet again Joyce and Rama!

Happy Birthday to the Church!

Today is Pentacost Sunday, where we celebrate two things: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the establishment of the Church. The Holy Spirit came, not just with spiritual gifts and anointing, but also to bring the Church into being.

Sharing from today’s readings, Pastor Augustin shared with us how the Holy Spirit did this by being the Spirit of Truth, revealing to us the reality of God through Jesus Christ. When we recognize this at the beginning, we embark on a lifelong journey as a Church family towards Christ, ever conforming into His likeness.

The Holy Spirit also intercedes on our behalf – He prays through us and for us. He thus calls us together as the Church to pray and intercede for the world around us.

The Holy Spirit therefore enables and empowers us to do the work of the Church. He empowers us even in the work that we do from day to day, if we remain connected and continuously filled with the Holy Spirit. Without Him, we end up being burnt out when we do things in our own strength.

SPIRIT SONG – John Wimber

O let the Son of God enfold you
With His Spirit and His love
Let Him fill your heart and satisfy your soul
O let Him have the things that hold you
And His Spirit like a dove
Will descend upon your life and make you whole

Jesus, O Jesus
Come and fill Your lambs
Jesus, O Jesus
Come and fill Your lambs

O come and sing this song with gladness
As your hearts are filled with joy
Lift your hands in sweet surrender to His name
O give Him all your tears and sadness
Give Him all your years of pain
And you’ll enter into life in Jesus’ name

Jesus, O Jesus
Come and fill Your lambs
Jesus, O Jesus
Come and fill Your lambs

Christians in Community – Rev. Dr. Phil Baker

Today was bittersweet for all of us.

We had the blessing of having our good friend Rev. Dr. Phil Baker preach a powerful encouragement on how Christians need to be in Community (based on today’s Lectionary readings). Christians without a community, he said, is a contradiction of terms. But, “It takes hard work to develop a deep abiding relationship,” he reminded and challenged us to consider.

In considering our family in Christ, Phil also noted that, “We did not choose our brothers and sisters in Christ” – that was God’s work! And, not only did we not choose our brothers and sisters, we also cannot love each other on our own strength, effort or power – all of that comes from God.

Even as we heard his powerful encouragement on the importance of community, we were sad to hear that this would be Phil’s last Sunday with us at BLC. After his summer break, he will be relocating to Indonesia to continue his work with the ELCA.

Thank you Phil, for sharing your life with us these past four years. We have come to love you as our very own and are not thrilled to let you go. But we know God’s Kingdom is bigger than just us and we know you will be a great blessing to our brothers and sisters in Indonesia, as you have been to us.

We love you and we’ll miss you. See you again soon – either we’ll visit you on the way to Lake Toba (as per your invitation!) or we’ll see you on your way through KL (you will always be welcome here)! Or, in the Lord’s timing, we’ll definitely see each other again when His Kingdom comes.

Happy Labour Day!

Today, even as we celebrate Labour Day as a welcome holiday in the middle of the work-week, let us also remind ourselves to give thanks for God’s blessings, as well as to remind ourselves that the work we do is also our Christian vocation – Christ working to change the world through us.

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of his land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Chris tour Lord, who lives and reigns with you , in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Happy Labour Day, everyone!
