Pray for #Nayati

We pray also for his parents to experience God’s strength and comfort amidst this terrible time, and that there will be friends and family who rally close to them as well.

CFM Media Statement: Revoke ISA Orders

Posting this here for you to be aware and to seek prayer over the matter:

    CHRISTIAN FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA

    (PERSEKUTUAN KRISTIAN MALAYSIA)

    Media Statement:

    REVOKE ISA ORDERS

    17 April 2012

The Christian Federation of Malaysia welcomes the Honourable Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib bin Tun Razak’s tabling of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Bill 2012 for second reading in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, 16 April 2012.

Once the Bill comes into operation, at a date yet to be fixed, the Internal Security Act 1960 will be repealed.

We acknowledge the Prime Minister’s attempt to remain true to the announcement he made on 15 September 2011 that he would abolish the Internal Security Act 1960.

Nonetheless, the CFM is concerned that as part of Clause 32 of the Bill dealing with the saving provisions, “The repeal of the Internal Security Act 1960 shall not affect – (a) any order issued or made under the repealed Act prior to the date of coming into operation of this Act, unless earlier revoked by the Minister.”

There are 3 orders issued under the Internal Security Act 1960 which are particularly offensive to the Christian community. These are:-

    1. Internal Security (Prohibition of Publications) (No. 4) Order 1982
This is a prohibition order on the Alkitab published by the Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia and printed in Korea. This order deems the Alkitab (The Bible in the Malay language) to be prejudicial to the national interest and security of the Federation and prohibits the printing, publication, sale, issue, circulation or possession of the publication with the condition that the prohibition “shall not apply to the possession or use in churches of such publication by persons professing the Christian religion, throughout Malaysia”. The order was signed on 22nd March 1982.
    2. Internal Security (Prohibition of Publications) (No.2) Order 1983
The publication “Kalam Hidup” published by the Kalam Hidup (Kemah Injil Gereja Masehi Indonesia) was prohibited throughout Malaysia and was stated as “prejudicial to the national interest of the Federation”. The order was signed on 4th May 1983.
    3. Internal Security (Prohibition of Publications) (No.3) Order 1983
The “Perjanjian Baru” published and printed by the Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia was prohibited because it was “prejudicial to the national interest of the Federation” but was allowed “subject to the possession or use in churches of such publication by persons professing the Christian religion, throughout Malaysia.” The order was signed on 4th May 1983.

Pursuant to Clause 32 of the Bill, such orders will remain in force notwithstanding the repeal of the Internal Security Act 1960. This is wholly unacceptable.

We call on the Prime Minister, in the spirit of the Global Movement of Moderates which he himself has launched and championed, to take immediate steps to revoke these orders.

As long as they remain part of the corpus of legislation in Malaysia, they represent an odious and obnoxious derogation from the freedom of religion in Malaysia.

Article 149 of the Federal Constitution, under which provisions the Internal Security Act 1960 was passed, clearly prohibits any inconsistency with Article 11 of the Federal Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion.

As such, these orders violate the Federal Constitution and should NEVER have been made in the first place.

These orders represent an unwarranted and illegitimate restriction of the right to profess, practice and propagate one’s religion.

It adds insult to injury if they are allowed to remain on our statute books.

We urge the Malaysian Government to take this golden opportunity to remove once and for all this stubborn stain on the rule of law in Malaysia.

    Bishop Datuk Ng Moon Hing
    Chairman and the Executive Committee,
    The Christian Federation of Malaysia.

BLC Church Camp at Che Foo Methodist Retreat Centre

Our Church Camp will be held from June 28 till July 1, 2012. It will be held at the Chefoo Methodist Centre, Cameron Highlands (sample pics available here).

What can you expect? Lots of fun times together. Worship together. The ministry of the Word. All in a breathtaking natural environment – cool, misty, fresh and clean. It’s a great time to recharge your body, mind and spirit!

We realise that those of us with children may find it difficult to have them skip school on that Thursday and Friday, so we’ve arranged the camp schedule in a way that the main events will happen from Friday evening onwards. So, if you do come up on Friday, you won’t miss too much of the activities together.

As for activities, we’re still open to suggestions. Of course, there will be a camp speaker, worship in song, games, hunting for food (tea and scones are obligatory) and lepak time.

Anything else to propose? Feel free to list them in the comments below!

If you’d like to register for the BLC Church Camp 2012, please email rumahpapa[dot]admin[at]gmail[dot]com.

    See you at camp!

A new name – The Lutheran Church in Malaysia

Dear Pastors, Members and Friends of LCMS,

Greetings in the Name of our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May the knowledge of His resurrection strengthen our hearts and hands for God’s mission in His world.

During our 31st Biennial Convention held last year from 18 – 20 August, the Church in Convention tabled, discussed and voted to approve the 2011 LCMS Constitutional Amendments. This revision contains major amendments to our 50-year old constitution, and these organizational changes are important in our effort to meet the needs and challenges of today. Some of the amendments include:

    · The change of name from LCMS to LCM (Lutheran Church in Malaysia)
    · The change of usage of the term ‘Convention’ to ‘General Assembly.’
    · To give voting rights to all fulltime pastors, either ordained or otherwise.
    · To provide clearer definition to the role and status of the Districts and the Deans.
    · To change the term of the Treasurer.
    · To provide the option of having a Moderator in future General Assemblies.

However, in our Malaysian context, such amendments would only be official upon the final approval granted by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) as stipulated by the ROS Act.

After many months of waiting prayerfully, I am glad to announce to you that we have finally received the approval for the amendments from the Registrar of Societies today. (10 April 2012) We must be thankful to our risen Lord for working in the hearts of the public officials in granting us the approval. I must also convey our gratitude to those who have kept this issue in their prayers all these months.

At the same time, let us be mindful of the fact that this approval also marks the beginning of a long and laborious process for both the national office and the congregations, to make related changes to reflect the new amendments. Some of these changes include: the change of names for the congregations; the changes of names for banking accounts; the change of name in the titles of our properties; and even the change of the office stationaries.

The Bishop’s Office will be seeking information from our legal advisers on how to begin this process, and the congregations will be duly kept informed. Meanwhile, I do solicit your continual prayer support as we embark together on this transition process.

Two days ago, we celebrated Easter. With the resurrection of the Lord, the disciples were given a new hope, a new identity. It is perhaps in God’s timing, that during this Easter season, He has given us a new name and a fresh identity. From this day forth, let us be known as the Easter people of the Lutheran Church in Malaysia!

    In Christ,

    Bishop Philip Lok
    Lutheran Church in Malaysia.

    名称由LCMS改为LCM(马来西亚信义会)
    “Convention” 年会改成”General Assembly” 常年大会
    赋予全时间教牧同工无论是已按立或未按立者有投票的权力
    赋予教区及教区长更明确的定义
    修正财政的任期
    在未来的常年大会中可弹性委任主持人Moderator

    11th BLC AGM

Bishop Philip Lok’s Easter Message 2012

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” (John 20:18)

Even though the first three months of 2012 have come and gone, the world still looks very much the same as it was in 2011. While the slaughter of the innocents remains unchecked in Syria, extremists continue to terrorize the majority in countries like Pakistan, Iraq and even, Thailand. Many nations also continue to suffer from the after effects of natural disasters like earthquake, tornadoes and famine.

In Malaysia, there is still the ongoing concern over the economy and rising cost of living. Politicians carry on using the race card with the hope to gain greater support from one section of the population in the looming General Elections. Religious tension continues to simmer, with new but unsubstantiated allegations made against the Malaysian church for trying to “Christianize” our Muslim friends.

As a result, many do wonder if things would ever change for the better. Or that these situations would instead become worse in days and months to come.

The disciples, who witnessed the brutal death of their Lord on that dark Friday, probably had the same questions whether the situations will change for the better. In all likelihood, all of them were frustrated and were in despair of their predicament. As Jesus lay lifeless in the tomb, their hope was equally dead too.

Then comes that seismic announcement by Mary Magdalene, “I have seen the Lord!” An announcement that turns everything upside down. Because Christ is risen, the Cross is not a defeat but victory. Because Christ is risen, sin and death no longer hold us captive. Because Christ is risen, a new order is now at work in the world.

Through the water of baptism and the sacrament of bread and wine, we too can say that, “We have seen the Lord!” Like Mary and the disciples, we are the people of the Resurrection. Like Mary and the disciples, we need to go out and proclaim this good news through our loving words and self-denying actions.

On this Easter Sunday, with a firm belief in the power of Christ’s resurrection and with a heart of thankfulness, we must join St. Paul in saying, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

On behalf of my family and the Executive Council, I wish all of you a ‘Blessed Easter.” May the fact of the Resurrection inspires and strengthens us for the mission of the Church.

Bishop Philip Lok, Lutheran Church in Malaysia & Singapore
